Ted Rogers 1933-2008

Canadian broadcasting lost one of its founding giants Tuesday with the passing of Edward Samuel ‘Ted’ Rogers at the age of 75. He suffered from congestive heart failure and died at his Toronto home, according to a statement issued by Rogers Communications.

Chairman Alan Horn will take over corporate duties as acting CEO, while the company will form a special committee to seek Rogers’ successor.

‘Ted Rogers was one of a kind who built this company from one FM radio station into Canada’s largest wireless, cable and media company. A leader also in giving to the community through his and Loretta’s many philanthropic initiatives. He will be sadly missed,’ commented Horn in a release.

The empire rose with the acquisition of Toronto radio station CHFI in 1962 while Rogers was in law school, and grew to include Rogers cable, wireless, radio and television entities, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Rogers Centre, the Citytv stations and cable channel Rogers Sportsnet.

Funeral announcements will be made by the family. Rogers leaves behind his wife Loretta and their four children — Edward, Lisa, Melinda and Martha.
