Proper TV’s Guy O’Sullivan on Cineflix Media’s Canadian pull-back

News that Cineflix Media is scaling back its Canadian programming arm is sending ripples across the industry.

“Our inbox has been swarming with Cineflix CVs today,” Guy O’Sullivan, president of indie producer Proper Television, told Playback.

Cineflix on Thursday unveiled a corporate reorganization that will see the producer expand its commissioning of unscripted series from Los Angeles and London.

The move comes as Toronto toppers Simon Lloyd and Joe Houlihan leave at the end of the year to form their own production shingle.

But O’Sullivan questions Cineflix’s decision to scale back in Canada, as like a host of other Canadian producers, it looks to work the golden triangle of the Canadian, U.S. and UK English-speaking markets with co-productions.

“I’m not scaling back. I’m doing the opposite. I’m expanding. This (Canada) is the perfect place from which to attack the world,” O’Sullivan argued.

Proper Television is producing upcoming factual series like Storage Wars Canada for Rogers Media’s OLN and Masterchef Canada for Bell Media’s CTV.

O’Sullivan adds he’s not producing factual series exclusively for Canada, but also making original series for export.
