Job losses at Astral

Facing softening advertising sales, Astral Media has restructured its English-language radio station business, with the loss of 23 jobs.

Montreal-based Astral, Canada’s largest radio station operator, said the retrenchment, which follows the $1.1-billion acquisition of Standard Radio last year, was done ‘to enhance its competitive position.’

Alain Bergeron, VP of brand management and corporate communications at Astral, on Wednesday said the broadcaster has no current plans for job cuts at its specialty and pay-TV unit.

‘We hope to avoid workforce reduction as much as we can,’ Bergeron added.
