Blue Ice acquires Blue Rodeo, Broken Social Scene docs

Both films will make their Canadian theatrical debuts at Toronto's Hot Docs Cinema in 2025.

Toronto-based indie distributor Blue Ice Docs has acquired theatrical and SVOD rights for a pair of feature documentaries on iconic Canadian bands Blue Rodeo and Broken Social Scene.

Directed by Dale Heslip, Blue Rodeo: Lost Together (Cream Films) covers the 40-year history of the beloved country-rock institution via extensive new interviews with the band’s leaders, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. The film will make its world premiere on Dec. 6 at the Whistler Film Festival in B.C.

Shot and directed by Stephen Chung, It’s All Gonna Break (Fathom Film Group) draws on intimate, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage to document the creation of Broken Social Scene, which evolved from a ramshackle side project for musicians from a range of established acts to an indie-rock powerhouse. The doc features interviews with all the members of the collective, including Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Feist, Emily Haines, Amy Milan, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Justin Peroff, John Crossingham, Evan Cranley, James Shaw, Jeffrey Remedios and David Newfeld.

Blue Ice president Robin Smith negotiated the deal for Blue Rodeo: Lost Together with Corey Russell of Cream Films, and for It’s All Gonna Break with Ann Shin of Fathom Film Group. Both films will make their Canadian theatrical debuts in 2025 at Toronto’s Hot Docs Cinema.
