Picture Day’s Tatiana Maslany and The Disappeared actor Shawn Doyle have won awards for best outstanding female and male performances, respectively, in the 2013 ACTRA awards, handed out Saturday night.

And Shannon Kook-Chun (Degrassi) won for outstanding voice performance for Jonathan Ng’s animated short Requiem for Romance.

Shirley Douglas, perhaps best known to Canadian audiences for playing May Bailey in Wind at My Back, received ACTRA Toronto’s 2013 Award of Excellence, presented by Rick Mercer.

The award recognized Douglas’ accomplished stage and TV career, and a lifetime of industry advocacy and civil rights activism.

Douglas, a Gemini winner for Shadow Lake, holds honorary doctorates from Ryerson University, Brandon University, University of Windsor and University of Regina, and in 2003 was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Two of Douglas’ children, 24 and Touch actor Kiefer Sutherland and his twin sister Rachel, attended the awards in support of their mother.

Douglas, according to a report from the CBC, said at the awards that Canada’s entertainment industry is suffering from lack of funding opportunities to produce homegrown series.

Both she and Kiefer Sutherland insisted, according to the CBC, that more initiatives are needed to bolster Canada’s star system and boost recognition of Canadian talent.

Maslany in Kate Melville’s Picture Day plays a rebellious teenager forced to repeat her last year of high school who blurs the line between adolescence and adulthood. The Regina-born actress, also named a TIFF Rising Star at last year’s festival, won a breakout performance award at Sundance in 2010 for her performance in Adriana Magg’s Grown Up Movie Star. She will next star in upcoming sci-fi thriller series Orphan Black for Space.

Newfoundland-born Doyle took top honours for his performance in Shandi Mitchell’s The Disappeared, about six men lost at sea in the North Atlantic. Doyle, who starred for four seasons on HBO’s Big Love, and more recently in episodes of Republic of Doyle, Flashpoint and Vegas, has roles in feature thrillers The Returned and Hunting Season in the pipeline.

Kook-Chun, following his voice work in the eight-minute animated short, has upcoming roles in features James Wan’s The Conjuring, Peter Stebbings’ Empire of Dirt and Alex Pugley’s Dirty Singles.

The 2013 ACTRA Awards, hosted by Elvira Kurt, were handed out Feb. 23 at the Carlu in Toronto.
