Smokebomb’s Backpackers travels to CW Digital

Backpackers, the original digital series from Shaftesbury’s Smokebomb Entertainment unit, is travelling stateside to CW Digital, it was announced Wednesday.

“The sale to CW Digital guarantees an exciting North American launch for Backpackers, representing a new opportunity for broadcast and digital media to come together to create content,” says Shaftesbury U.S. co-head Maggie Murphy. The company has an office in Los Angeles.

Backpackers follows two best friends on a search across Europe for one of their fiancées, after the engaged friend realizes he made a mistake in taking a separate European adventure from his fiancée leading up to their wedding.

The eight six-minute episodes will be shot on location in Europe starting in spring 2013.

Smokebomb will also develop an interactive, choose-your-own adventure app to pull in viewers from the targeted 18-to-34 demo, which will launch in conjunction with the digital series.

CWD is the digital-only studio of The CW Network in the U.S., which primarily features programming for the series’ targeted demo, including Arrow, Beauty and the Beast and Gossip Girl.

CTV in October ordered the standalone series from Shaftesbury’s digital production studio for online broadcast.

Backpackers is receiving funding from the Canada Media Fund’s experimental stream and Ontario digital tax credits.
