Canada had a strong showing among the nominees for the 3rd Annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, with several domestic productions and copros garnering multiple nods.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees on Thursday (Dec. 12), as well as a shift to the awards date, moving it to March 15. The awards were previously held in December.
Apple TV+ series Jane (Sinking Ship Entertainment, Jane Goodall Institute) and Canada/U.K. copro Malory Towers (WildBrain, King Bert Productions) are nominated in the Children’s or Family Viewing Series category.
Malory Towers picked up six nominations overall, including Lead Performer in a Preschool, Children’s or Young Teen Program for Ella Bright and a supporting performance nod for Amanda Lawrence. The series was also nominated for Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design for a Single Camera Program, Lighting, Camera and Technical Arts and Costume Design/Styling.
Malory Towers is an adaptation of the book series by British author Enid Blyton, which sees a 12-year-old girl attend a boarding school following the Second World War. The series airs on CBBC in the U.K., BYUtv in the U.S. and Family Channel in Canada.
Jane earned three nominations overall, including Directing for a Single Camera Live Action Series and Sound Mixing and Sound Editing for a Live Action Program. Created by Sinking Ship founding partner J.J. Johnson, the series follows a young girl on a mission to save endangered species.
Netflix series Hilda (Silvergate Media, Mercury Filmworks) garnered five nominations in total, including Children’s or Young Teen Animated Series. It also picked up nods for writing, directing, editing and voice directing in the animated series categories. Hilda is based on the graphic novels by British illustrator Luke Pearson about a young girl who befriends monsters after moving to the city of Trolberg. The show ran for three seasons, ending on Dec. 7, 2023.
TVOKids and BYUtv’s All-Round Champion (marblemedia) earned a nomination for Non-Fiction Program, in addition to directing and editing nods in the multi-cam live action categories. The reality competition series sees young athletes train and compete in sports outside their main discipline.
Several series from 9 Story Media Group picked up nominations. PBS Kids’ Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, about a young boy learning about historical figures, garnered writing, directing and sound mixing/editing nominations in the preschool animated categories.
The PBS Kids animated series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, produced with Fred Rogers Productions, was nominated for Interactive Media as well as for voice directing. The live-action BBC and BYUtv series A Kind of Spark, produced in association with Scottish prodco LS Productions, earned a nod for Lead Performer in a Preschool, Children’s or Young Teen Program for Lola Blue.
Rounding out the list, PBS Kids and CBC Kids series Molly of Denali, produced by WGBH Kids and animated by Atomic Cartoons, picked up nods for Interactive Media and Writing for a Preschool Animated Series; Family Channel and BYUtv series Ruby and the Well (Shaftesbury) earned a nod for Lighting, Camera and Technical Arts; and Vancouver-shot Mattel and Nickelodeon TV film Monster High 2 picked up nods for Fiction Special, Costume Design/Styling, Hairstyling and Makeup and Choreography.
