For the third week in a row, the biggest box office earner worldwide is a Canadian film.
Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth installment of the Resident Evil franchise from Canadian co-producer Don Carmody, took in another $20.7 million over the weekend from video game addicts on 6,460 screens in 65 markets.
That brings the cumulative worldwide gross for the Canada-German co-production shot in Toronto at Cinespace’s Kipling studio facility to $137 million.
Inspired by the Camcom video game Resident Evil, the movie adaptation Resident Evil: Retribution, directed by Paul S.W. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich, is on its way to possibly matching the around $300 million in total worldwide box office sales recorded by 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife.
Sony is releasing Resident Evil: Retribution in most world markets.
The movie opened on Sept. 14 in 59 markets, including North America, and at 8,059 venues.
Resident Evil is a Constantin Film and Davis Films/Impact Pictures production that is produced by Paul W.S. Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Robert Kulzer, Don Carmody and Samuel Hadida.
