Telefilm Canada announced Monday that it is backing production of nine feature films with a $14 million investment through the Canada Feature Film Fund.

An Enemy and The Colony topped the funding list, receiving $3.6 million and $2.3 million, respectively.

An Enemy, from director Denis Villeneuve and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, is currently in production in Toronto through to July 13.

The Canada-Spain co-production, produced by Rhombus Media, is based on the novel The Double by Jose Saramago, and sees Gyllenhaal play a dual role.

Out of the western region, Jeff Renfroe’s The Colony, starring Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Zegers and Bill Paxton was filmed in March and April in Toronto and North Bay.

The sci-fi thriller, an Ontario-Quebec co-production, is produced by Paul Barkin of Toronto-based Alcina Pictures, Marie-Claude Poulin and Pierre Even of Montreal-based Item 7 and Matthew Cervi’s Vancouver-based Mad Samurai Productions.

Horror musical Stage Fright, from writer-director Jerome Sable and produced by Serendipity Point Films, received a $2 million investment.

And Copperheart Entertainment-produced Wolves, from writer-director David Haytor, received $1.9 million, while Rubba Nadda’s third feature Inescapable, produced by Foundry Films, received $1.8 million.

Inescapable stars Alexander Siddig, Marisa Tomei and Joshua Jackson, and was shot earlier this year in Canada, South Africa and Lebanon.

Sudz Sutherland’s Home Again, produced by Hungry Eyes Film and Television, received $1.6 million.

In the Quebec region, Cyanure, a French-language minority copro with Switzerland, from writer-director Severine Cornamusaz and produced by Item 7, received $300,000, while Tony Pemberton’s Buddha’s Little Fingers, produced by Amerique Film, received $150,000.

Elsewhere, Old Stock, directed by James Genn and produced by Geordie Sabbagh Productions, received $75,000.
