A total of $785,000 will be disbursed to five recipients under the latest round of the Quebecor Fund’s Event and Film Production Assistance Program, announced Wednesday.
A prequel to the first Les Boys film (pictured), Les Boys le premier chapitre, is among the film production recipients.
The film will tell the story of Stan, Jean-Charles, Meo, Bob, Fern and Marcel in 1965, when they are all between 12 and 15 years old, playing on the parish’s second hockey team and prepping for the Christmas tournament. Melenny Productions Inc. produces, and Les Films Séville Inc. will distribute the film.
The 1997 Les Boys film, directed by Louis Saia and distributed by Lions Gate, topped the Quebec box office during its release, grossing nearly $7 million in the province. The franchise has spawned three sequels.
Amsterdam, produced by Cirrus Communications Inc. and distributed by Alliance Vivafilm Inc. will also receiving funding. The thriller follows three childhood friends whose weekend trip is upended by one of their disappearances.
Also receiving funding is Rouge sang, produced by Ciné Télé Action Inc. and distributed by Atopia Distribution Inc., which focuses on a young mother forced to shelter five British soldiers on New Years Eve in 1799 in a remote corner of the Saint Lawrence Valley.
All three film productions selected for the EFPAP were also chosen in December by Telefilm to receive funding under its Canada Feature Film Fund for 2012-2013.
Le Ranch à Willie (working title) is one of two event productions to receive funding under the EFPAP. Using the opening performances at the 45th edition of the Festival Western de St-Tite, the two-hour HD concert special will be produced in a similar style to Willie Lamothe’s early 1970s variety show, Le Ranch à Willie. Performers will include some Quebec music industry heavyweights, including Roch Voisine and Isabelle Boulay. Both the live event and televised production will be produced by Québec-based Communications IBTV Inc.
Also receiving event production funding is Le Retour de nos Idoles 2012, a follow up to the successful 2011 edition of the production. The show, lead by Ginette Reno, will feature 16 of Québec’s biggest pop stars performing French-langugae hits from the 1960s to the 1980s, and will run from May 4 to May 6 at the Colisee Pepsi in Quebec City. The televised production will be produced by Productions Select TV Inc., and the event will be produced by Musicor Spectacles.
The EFPAP program supports the production, television coverage and multi-platform strategic development for Canadian French-language feature films and events. The EFPAP was launched in September 2010, and has disbursed nearly $2.4 million to date.
