eOne swings to first-half profit on film and TV gains

Entertainment One (eOne) on Monday swung to a first-half pre-tax profit of $15.9 million, compared to a loss of $2.4 million in 2010.

Unveiling its interim results in the UK, where the Canadian producer trades on the London Stock Exchange, Toronto-based eOne saw overall revenue rise 1% to $331 million.

The company said the return to profitability reflected growth in underlying EBITDA, which rose 72% from year-earlier levels to $38 million for the six months to Sept. 30.

Stripping out amortisation of acquired intangible assets, share-based payment charges and other one-off items, eOne reported an adjusted pre-tax profit of $30.5 million, against an adjusted pre-tax profit of $8.5 million in 2010.

eOne’s film and TV production and distribution business, key to a strategy of diversifying away from physical wholesaling of media product, saw revenue rise 9% to $227 million.

Revenue in Canada fell 6% on 27 titles released theatrically, compared to 32 in the year-earlier period, which included The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

On the TV side, eOne delivered episodes of Rookie Blue, Haven, Hell on Wheels (pictured) and Hung.

The filmed entertainment revenue gains helped offset a 13.4% slide in physical home entertainment wholesale business to $142.2 million.

“These solid results validate the group’s commitment to content acquisitions, productions and effective distribution across major territories in multiple formats,” eOne president and CEO Darren Throop said in a statement.
