U.S.-based pay cabler Starz Entertainment has decided against taking a second season of the European costume drama Camelot, co-produced by Canadian indie Take 5 Productions.

“Due to significant production challenges, Starz has decided not to exercise the option for subsequent seasons of Camelot with our production partners GK-tv, Octagon Films and Take 5 Productions,” Starz said in a statement.

The new version of the Arthurian legend for Starz and other international markets faced stiff competition when it bowed stateside against HBO’s Game of Thrones and Showtime’s historical drama The Borgias, which Take 5 Productions also co-produces.

The CBC is airing Camelot, which comes from the creative team that brought the pubcaster The Tudors.
