Citytv’s New Year’s Eve bash wins the night

Some party: Citytv’s New Year’s Bash Live grabbed a ratings win on Friday to close 2010, beating out ET Canada’s New Year’s Eve Special on Global Television and a slew of American cross-border competition.

Citytv’s New Year’s Eve TV broadcast from Nathan Phillips Square, which brought on-screen confetti and fireworks to all Citytv stations and OMNI.2 in Ontario at midnight, snagged a cumulative 5.26 million viewers, according to BBM Canada data.

Rival Global Television secured an average 2.5 million total viewers for its ET New Year’s Eve special from 10:00pm and 11:00 p.m., and an average 3.9 million viewers for its second hour to midnight.

That audience nearing midnight edged out the 3.64 million viewers that tuned into ABC’s Dick Clark’s Primetime and Rocking New Year.

Meanwhile, another 1.39 million Canadians viewed CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live, hosted by Kathy Griffin, and another 575,000 Canadians turned to MTV Canada to watch the Jersey Shore’s Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi slowly drop at midnight from inside a giant hamster cage in New Jersey.
