Blink49 forms joint venture with Frequency Films

News of the joint venture came the same day the Toronto-based studio received the greenlight on an untitled Prime Video docuseries executive produced with Serena Williams.

Blink49 Studios has formed a joint venture with J.H. Wyman’s Frequency Films to develop television projects for the U.S. and Canada.

Announced yesterday (May 12), the partnership was brokered by CAA, Anonymous Content and Gregg Homer’s Entertainment Law Group. The Oakland, Calif. born, Montreal-raised Wyman was the executive producer and showrunner for the Fox sci-fi series Fringe and, through Frequency Films, produced series such as NBC’s Debris and Fox’s Almost Human.

The venture has the goal of leveraging Blink49’s track record in premium content development, production infrastructure and established relationships across talent, buyers and platforms with Wyman’s storytelling and the creative vision of his Frequency Films.

“Joel’s innovative approach to storytelling and track-record for crafting rich, immersive narratives make Frequency an ideal partner as we expand our slate of cross-border projects with global appeal,” said Pancho Mansfield, president, global scripted television, Blink49 Studios, in a statement.

The Canadian and international projects on Blink49 and Frequency’s slate includes the thriller White and the heist series Rendezvous, to be filmed in Montreal, among others.

“This joint venture with Blink49 is a meaningful step for Frequency Films, as it allows us to continue telling bold, human stories in unexpected ways while championing exceptional Canadian voices around the world,” said Wyman.

The news came the same day Prime Video greenlit an untitled docuseries from Toronto’s Blink49 Studios and Serena Williams focused on female CEOs.

The series was announced ahead of Prime Video’s annual upfront presentation.

The series from Blink49 alongside Amazon MGM Studios, is executive produced by Williams (pictured) and Caroline Currier from Williams’ prodco Nine Two Six Productions, as well as Blink49’s Tara Long and Nadine Rajabi. Blink49 produces alongside Amazon MGM Studios.

The docuseries will follow a group of female CEOs navigating their personal and professional lives, including Williams herself; Latin pop singer Thalia; former model and fashion designer Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger; Shop.com CEO Loren Ridinger; supermodel and founder of Cay Skin Winnie Harlow; founder of Conteur Capital and wellness expert Hannah Bronfman; and fashion and jewelry designer Isabela Rangel Grutman.
