Toronto’s 90th Parallel Productions and Prospero Pictures are set to produce a feature drama on the life story of Canadian runner and Olympic gold medalist Andre De Grasse (pictured).
The project is currently in the development stage with 90th Parallel’s Stuart Henderson (Butt Seriously) and Javiera Quintana (The Climate Baby Dilemma) producing alongside Prospero founder and president Martin Katz (The Shrouds). The biopic, written by Playback‘s 2020 10 to Watch alum and former track-and-field athlete Caleigh Bacchus (Diggstown) focuses on De Grasse’s early career and his rise to the Olympic stage from the age of 15 to 21.
Endy founder and Groupon co-founder Rajen Ruparell is on board as an executive producer and is working with the team to help fund the project. The companies intend to enter production in 2026.
Although 90th Parallel is known for its unscripted and documentary productions, its president Henderson told Playback Daily that the company has been exploring and developing dramatic projects for several years alongside industry veterans. Specific to this project, Henderson notes that the team has been working with De Grasse to ensure the story pushes beyond sports biopic tropes.
“His rise from a Canadian kid facing systemic barriers to an Olympic podium—guided by the love of his mother, the influence of mentors and his own inner fire—is exactly the kind of intimate yet universal story that we always seek to tell,” said Henderson.
