The Apprentice, Denis Villeneuve secure BAFTA nominations

The Apprentice garnered three nominations at this year's British Academy Film Awards.

Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice has garnered three nominations at the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards.

The Apprentice actors Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong picked up lead and supporting nominations, respectively, for their performances as Donald Trump and Roy Cohn in the Canada/Ireland/Denmark coproduction. The Apprentice‘s Stephanie Gorin and Carmen Cuba also received a nomination for Best Casting.

The biopic is produced by Daniel Bekerman from Toronto’s Scythia Films, Julianne Ford and Ruth Treacy from Ireland’s Tailored Films, and Jacob Jarek from Denmark’s Profile Pictures, along with Abbasi and Louis Tisné.

The Apprentice has picked up several nominations during awards season, including two noms for Stan and Strong at the Golden Globes and three at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards. The film also received four nominations at the 2025 Irish Film and Television Academy Awards earlier this year, including Best Film, Best International Actor for Stan, original music David Holmes and for hair and makeup for Sandra Kelly and Tom McInerney.

Gentilly, Que.-born director Denis Villeneuve was nominated for Best Director for Dune: Part Two. The science-fiction epic earned seven total nominations, including for production design, special visual effects, sound, makeup and hair, editing and cinematography.

The B.C.-shot film Heretic scored a leading actor nomination for Hugh Grant.

Both The Apprentice and Dune: Part Two have been shortlisted for makeup and hair nominations at this year’s Oscars. The full list of nominees are scheduled to be announced on Jan. 23, following two postponements due to the wildfires in L.A.
