Anthem Sports & Entertainment to acquire Hollywood Suite

The deal is still subject to regulatory approval and will see president David Kines continue to manage the business.

Toronto-headquartered media company Anthem Sports & Entertainment has entered an agreement to acquire Canadian indie channel Hollywood Suite.

The companies announced the deal Wednesday (Sept. 25), which will see president and co-founder David Kines (pictured right) remain on to manage the business.

The sale is subject to regulatory approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Through the acquisition, Anthem will “deliver greater scale and investment to the Canadian system,” according to a news release. The company’s portfolio of acquisitions includes film distributor Gravitas Ventures and U.S. cable network HDNet Movies.

Hollywood Suite was founded in 2011 as a pure-play linear channel for films in Canada. The broadcaster runs four specialty channels focused on the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s, respectively, as well as an on-demand streaming platform.

The broadcaster expanded to series commissions in 2019 with its Year in Film docuseries. Since then, Hollywood Suite has acquired titles such as scripted series Potluck Ladies, Poly is the New Monogamy and Department of Paranormal Affairs and docuseries The Ashgrove Experiment.

“Anthem is focused on providing fresh and unique content offerings catering to a wide and diverse network of passionate fanbases, and the acquisition of Hollywood Suite helps us further that strategy in a major way,” said Anthem founder and CEO Leonard Asper (pictured left) in a statement.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank all of our employees over the last 13 years whose commitment and hard work are responsible for the level of success we have achieved,” added Jeff Sackman, co-founder of Hollywood Suite and co-chair of the board of directors. “I would also like to acknowledge the unwavering support of our shareholders who endorsed our vision from the beginning.”
