Judd Apatow boards doc on 1972 Toronto Godspell show

The doc chronicles the historic Toronto musical production that featured Martin Short, Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin early in their careers.

Filmmaker Nick Davis (pictured left) is teaming with super-producer Judd Apatow (right) for a feature documentary on the 1972 Toronto production of the stage musical Godspell, which featured a cast of future comedy legends including Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin.

The as-yet-untitled project will be produced by Nick Davis Productions and Apatow Productions. Davis serves as producer, alongside Sue Turley of XRM Media and Tom Powers of Toronto’s Open Door Co. The executive producers are Apatow, Stephanie Hannon, Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley.

Slated for release in 2025, the film will chronicle the mounting of the historic 1972 production — which marked early-career highlights for future SCTV stars Short, Levy, Martin and Dave Thomas, as well as original Saturday Night Live cast member Radner, the show’s lead Victor Garber, and musical director Paul Shaffer. CAA and UTA will handle worldwide sales.

The film will also document the unique creative ferment in early-’70s Toronto, as the cast’s extended group of friends and colleagues included soon-to-be stars John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.

The doc will feature interviews with all the surviving cast members of the 1972 production, as well as never-before-seen footage and unique personal archive material, including audio recordings that Short made of the show’s performance.

Helmer Davis has previously directed such titles as Ted Williams: The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived for PBS’ American Masters, the Emmy-winning Jack: The Last Kennedy Film for CBS and Once Upon a Time in Queens for ESPN’s 30 for 30 strand. He is also currently serving as an executive producer on a recently announced Netflix project on the 2004 Boston Red Sox.
