Wildling Pictures launches TV division with drama, family titles

The Toronto prodco's development slate includes live-action dramas and animated series.

Toronto-based indie prodco Wildling Pictures has launched a TV division, unveiling a raft of titles in development.

Wildling’s Matt Code (Accused), Natalie Urquhart (Suits) and Julie Strifler (Easy Land) are all executive producers on the series, which vary from “high-end” drama to kids-friendly animation. The prodco is best known for its feature film work, including recent productions Young Werther and See For Me.

Among the adult-skewing projects on the slate is an adaptation of the mystery thriller A Death at The Party by Toronto-born author Amy Stuart, about the events leading up to a murder at a garden party. Joanne Sarazen (Backspot, Tammy’s Always Dying) is attached to develop the adaptation.

The prodco is also in development on a YA series, Clara Voyant, based on the coming-of-age novel from Vancouver-based author Rachelle Delaney. Veronika Paz (Astrid and Lilly Save the World) is on board to develop the project, which follows a wannabe journalist who discovers she is clairvoyant when she’s forced to write the horoscopes section for the school newspaper.

Wildling is also branching into animation with the adult-targeted series Hot Flash, based on the short film of the same name by Thea Hollatz, co-produced with Thirty-one Sixty Pictures. The project is an animated workplace comedy that centres on a newscaster going through menopause, with Susan Coyne (Daisy Jones & The Six) and James Schultz (Disappearance at Clifton Hill) attached as co-writers. Kristy Neville is an executive producer.

The prodco also confirmed that CBC is on board to develop preschool animation Professor Goose. Wildling first announced in 2022 that it had acquired the rights to the children’s book series from Winnipeg-born author Paulette Bourgeois, best known for creating the character Franklin the Turtle.

Wildling is currently seeking partnerships with broadcasters and studios for its TV slate, as well as established directors and series creators at home and internationally, according to a news release.

“Having built a strong reputation within the feature film production space, we are delighted to be expanding our expertise with the launch of our original TV content,” said Code in a statement. We are looking forward to working with some incredible talent, and introducing these projects to potential partners at Content London in a few weeks.”
