Toronto-based distributor levelFILM’s co-founder David Hudakoc and head of distribution John Bain have left the company.
The departures were announced by levelFILM on Friday (July 28) along with the news that media investment company Various Things Entertainment has supplied the distributor with a “capital injection,” according to a news release. Various Things Entertainment holds a controlling interest in levelFILM.
Hudakoc co-founded levelFILM with Michael Baker in 2013, and also served as the company’s managing director. He has departed to “pursue new opportunities,” said the release.
Similarly, Bain has left to “pursue a new chapter in the ever-changing landscape of the Canadian film industry.” He joined levelFILM in 2018 after its acquisition of his indie distribution company Search Engine Films.
The distributor declined to comment on the value of the capital investment or whether Hudakoc and Bain’s roles will be replaced.
The investment “will allow levelFILM to foster the next generation of Canadian storytellers,” said Various Things Entertainment president Ben C. Silverman in a statement, noting that the added capital will set the stage “for immense growth over the next year.”
The distributor’s upcoming releases include Bill Pohlad’s biopic Dreamin’ Wild and Marc Turtletaub’s sci-fi comedy Jules. The latter film is distributed by Bleecker Street, which inked an output deal with levelFILM last year. LevelFILM is also set to distribute Canadian titles such as Backspot and Young Werther.
“With our comprehensive library of titles and star-studded upcoming slate, I’m thrilled to be a part of the team who will take things to the next level,” said We thank David and John for their remarkable contribution to levelFILM’s success and wish them the best of luck with their future endeavours,” said levelFILM CFO Pratik (Tiki) Patel.
