The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced that acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan will return to the festival with the world premiere of his latest film, Seven Veils.
The film will debut as a special presentation on Sept. 10. An avant-première, presented in partnership with the Canadian Opera Company, will take place on Sept. 8 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, according to a news release.
Seven Veils stars Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Liddiard, Douglas Smith, Mark O’Brien and Vinessa Antoine, and follows a theatre director (Seyfried) remounting her former mentor’s most famous work, the opera Salome. It marks Egoyan’s 18th film to premiere at TIFF.
“We are honoured to premiere Atom Egoyan’s extraordinary film at this year’s festival,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey in a statement. “Egoyan’s cinematic works are unmatched, and we’re excited to bring Seven Veils to our TIFF audiences and to the city of Toronto, his home.”
The film is inspired by Egoyan’s own Toronto production of Salome, which he revived with the Canadian Opera Company this year after helming a production in 1996, said the release. Opera cast members Ambur Braid and Michael Kupfer-Radecky will appear in the film.
Seven Veils is produced by Rhombus Media and Egoyan’s Ego Film Arts, with the participation of Telefilm Canada and Ontario Creates, in association with IPR.VC, Cinetic Media, Bell Media’s Crave and the Canadian Opera Company. Elevation Pictures is distributing the film in Canada, and XYZ Films is handling world sales.
TIFF runs from Sept. 7 to 17, with additional details to be announced in the coming weeks.
