Prime Video’s Three Pines not returning for second season

The Quebec-shot series has not been renewed for an additional season following its premiere in late 2022.

Prime Video’s Quebec-set crime drama Three Pines will not return for season two.

The Amazon-owned streaming service has opted not to renew the series, a spokesperson for Prime Video confirmed to Playback Daily. “We are proud of the work done on the series and the opportunity to work with great partners,” said the spokesperson.

Three Pines (8 x 60-minutes) was produced by U.K. prodco Left Bank Pictures and filmed in Montreal and rural Quebec, with Montreal and Toronto-based Muse Entertainment providing production services. It was among the first scripted series to be billed as a “Canadian Amazon original series” when it was first greenlit in 2021. It premiered on Prime Video on Dec. 2, 2022.

The series was adapted from Canadian author Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Gamache detective series, with Alfred Molina starring as Gamache. It features on-screen Canadian talent such as Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Tantoo Cardinal, Rossif Sutherland, Clare Coulter and Sarah Booth.

Mohawk filmmaker Tracey Deer served as lead director, with Quebec’s Daniel Grou and the U.K.’s Sam Donovan also directing. Deer also served as an Indigenous consultant alongside Katsitsionni Melissa Fox and IllumiNative.

Penny announced the cancellation news on her Facebook page earlier this week, stating she was “shocked and upset” by the decision. “Like any show, it had growing pains, but it was only going to get better and better,” she wrote.

Executive producers on Three Pines included Andy Harries, Sharon Hughff, and John Phillips on behalf of Left Bank, as well as Molina, Donovan, and British scribe Emilia di Girolamo, who served as lead writer on the series.
