The Quebecor Fund has allocated more than $2.1 million to Canadian prodcos under its Television Production Assistance Program.
The funds have been provided through two components, with the fund giving $621,568 in the Support for the Creation of Intellectual Property stream and $1,510,333 in the Support for the Production of Intellectual Property for International Markets stream. The latter component is administered in partnership with the Canada Media Fund (CMF), which contributed an additional $406,667, bringing the total support to $1,917,000.
The Support for the Creation of Intellectual Property component supports companies in the development of original television formats and concepts. Three companies were supported in this round, including Matane, Que.’s PVP Média, and Montreal-based prodcos Attraction Images and Yzanakio.
The Support for the Production of Intellectual Property for International Markets component is meant to increase the production value of a TV series with potential to succeed globally, and must have a French-language broadcaster attached. The latest round saw 10 scripted series receive support, and one documentary series.
Of the 10 scripted series, five are funded with the support of CMF, including Détective Surprenant (V10 Média), with TVA Distribution as the international distributor and TVA Group’s Club illico as the Canadian broadcaster; season two of Bête noire (Encore Télévision; pictured), with Corus Entertainment’s Séries Plus as the Canadian broadcaster; season three of Portrait-Robot (Also Productions), with TVA Group attached for Club illico; season two of L’Air d’aller (Urbania) under Télé-Québec; and season two of La Confrérie (ComediHa!), with Bell Media’s Noovo attached.
The additional five scripted projects are Stop (A Média) with broadcaster Radio-Canada; season two of Classé secret (Duo Productions) under TVA Group’s AddikTV; season two of Lac-Noir (Pixcom) under TVA Group’s Club illico; season two of Une affaire criminelle (Sovimage), under Bell Media’s Crave; and season two of Les Cavaliers (Trio Orange), with TV5 attached.
The single docuseries to receive support is Le Colosse Plamondon (Productions J), with Bell Media’s Canal D attached. The docuseries is also supported in partnership with CMF.
The Television Production Assistance Program has provided nearly $99.4 million under its components since its inception in 1999, according to a news release. The latest round brings the total number of supported projects to 360, involving 99 production companies, 49 domestic broadcasters, and 59 foreign broadcasters.
