Toronto-based digital content platform Wattpad Webtoon Studios and Vancouver’s Great Pacific Media (GPM) have teamed up on the young-adult film Boot Camp, based on Gina Musa’s hit global Wattpad novel of the same name.
GPM acquired the film and TV rights to the coming-of-age story and is producing it for parentco Thunderbird Entertainment’s scripted division, according to a news release issued Tuesday (Oct. 18). Wattpad Webtoon Studios will manage global sales and distribution outside of Canada for the film adaptation of the web book, which which has over 26 million reads on Wattpad.
Boot Camp is partially backed by Wattpad Webtoon Studios’ US$100-million development and production fund commitment from South Korean parent company Naver, which was announced as part of the merger of Wattpad Studios and Webtoon Studios in 2021.
Production on the film started in Vancouver earlier this month and has now wrapped. The budget has not been disclosed.
Mackenzie Munro (Salvation) is the film’s director while while Gemma Holdway (Cardinal) is the screenwriter.
Boot Camp was developed with GPM, Toronto-based December Films, Junction Hammer Productions and Channel Zero Studios.
Aron Levitz, David Madden and Lindsey Weems Ramey are the executive producers for Wattpad Webtoon Studios. Lindsay Macadam is producing for GPM while David Way and Wendy McKernan are executive producing for the company.
Todd Berger and Julie DiCresce are executive producing for December Films and Jennifer Chen and Sabrina Spence are executive producing for Junction Hammer Productions.
Drew Ray Tanner, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Ennis Esmer, and Rachel Boudwin star in the romantic comedy, about which is described as a “body-empowerment story” about a notoriously unathletic teen who joins an intense summer boot camp where she falls for her personal trainer.
The film turns “tired tropes on their head” and showcases a female lead who “doesn’t need an external makeover in order to fall in love and live happily ever after,” said Lindsey Ramey, head of global film at Wattpad Webtoon Studios in a statement.
