CBC legal drama Diggstown‘s fourth season will be its last.
The pubcaster announced on Thursday (Oct. 6) that the series, produced by Circle Blue Entertainment, Freddie Films and Waterstar Entertainment, will not be renewed for a fifth season. The final six episodes will air beginning Oct. 12, with the series finale airing on Nov. 16.
Diggstown‘s fourth season was announced as part of CBC’s upfront presentation in June. At the time the public broadcaster confirmed that procedural Coroner and sketch comedy TallBoyz would not be returning for additional seasons.
A CBC spokesperson tells Playback Daily that “the Diggstown producers pitched a fourth season with an eye to wrapping up [lead character] Marcie Diggs’ storyline in a satisfying way, and we are making that announcement now ahead of the finale season.”
The series stars Vinessa Antoine as a corporate lawyer who moves back to Dartmouth, N.S. after a family tragedy and tries to make a difference through the legal aid office. It was created by Floyd Kane, who also served as showrunner and executive producer during its run.
“For four seasons we’ve had the pleasure of bringing Marcie Diggs and the beauty of the communities of Dartmouth, Halifax, Charlottetown, North Preston and East Preston into homes across Canada,” said Kane in a statement. “We’re so grateful to have been able to walk this journey with our incredible cast led by the force, that is, Vinessa Antoine. It’s been a privilege to collaborate with the amazing team of production professionals in Nova Scotia, Ontario and P.E.I. who brought Diggstown to life.”
Sally Catto, GM, entertainment, factual and sports at CBC, added that the series “has always been fearless in its portrayal of the inequities that still exist in the Canadian legal system and our country as a whole, through authentic storylines and powerful performances.”
Diggstown made Canadian history when it was first greenlit in 2018 as the first original Canadian drama to feature a Black Canadian woman as the lead character, according to CBC. It would go on to be acquired by U.S. streaming BET+ and later by FOX. Entertainment One holds international distribution rights.
Directors on the final season include Kane, Cory Bowles (Black Cop), Rama Rau (Honey Bee) and Shamim Sarif (SkyMed). Season four writers include Kane, Lynn Coady (Burden of Truth), Ellen Vanstone (Departure), Lakna Edilima (Utopia Falls), Roxann Whitebean (SkyMed), Caleigh Bacchus (Murdoch Mysteries), James Battiston (Shoot the Messenger) and JP Larocque (Coroner).
