CBC and HBO Max dramedy Sort Of and Radio-Canada’s Pour toi Flora (Dear Flora) are among the Canadian projects nominated for the MIPCOM Cannes Diversify TV Awards.
The Quebecor and Club Illico series Audrey’s Back and CBC’s Proud To Be Me are also in contention for the sixth edition of the awards, which will unfold during the 28th annual trade show’s conference program running Oct. 17 to 20 on the French Riviera.
Sort Of (pictured; Sphere Media), starring Bilal Baig as a non-binary nanny, is in the running in the category of Representation of LGBTQIA+ – Scripted against Netflix’s Heartstopper and TF1’s (S)he. The debut season of the series, distributed by Abacus Media Rights and Sphere Media Distribution, has been widely lauded in recent months with honours including a Peabody Award and three Canadian Screen Awards. Season two of the show, co-created by Baig and director Fab Filippo, debuts Nov. 15 on CBC.
Pour toi Flora, produced by Nish Media for ICI Radio-Canada and APTN, is nominated in the Representation of Race and Ethnicity – Scripted category alongside Fandango’s Bangla – The Series and Flixxo’s Che Peruvian (“Che Peruano”). The drama, about an Algonquin brother and sister who were taken away from their parents and sent to a residential school in the 1960s, is written and directed by Sonia Bonspille Boileau. It’s distributed by Attraction Distribution.
Audrey’s Back, produced by Pixcom in collaboration with Quebecor Content, is up for Representation of Disability – Scripted. It’s distributed by Beta Film and is in contention against CBBC and BBC iPlayer’s Dodger and Kan 11’s Exceptional. Directed by Guillaume Lonergan and written by Guillaume Lambert and Florence Longpré, Audrey’s Back is about a woman who has to relearn how to live after waking up from a 16-year coma.
The CBC anti-racism special Proud To Be Me is nominated for Representation of Diversity in Kids Programming – Pre-school alongside Vancouver-based Big Bad Boo Studios’ animated series Lili & Lola, available on North American streamer Oznoz. Also nominated is CBeebies and BBC iPlayer’s CBeebies Presentation.
This year’s awards received a record 191 submissions from 27 countries, according to a news release. Finalists were chosen by a jury comprising leading professionals who are committed to diversity and inclusion. The event will also announce recipient(s) of the new Behind The Scenes Impact Award.
British TV anchor and diversity advocate Femi Oke will host the Oct. 19 ceremony, which is billed as “the industry’s only awards to celebrate, champion and promote diversity and inclusion through exemplary representation in television series and entertainment programmes internationally.”
The awards are organized in collaboration with founding partner DiversifyTV, and in association with founding presenting partner A+E Networks, presenting partner Netflix, and returning awards partners Telefilm Canada, Canada Media Fund and All3Media International and D.I.M.E.S., among others.
