Hot Sheet: Demand for summer faves stays steady

Three Ontario-shot series maintained their spots on the top 10 digital originals list for the week of July 18 to 24.

Viewers still seem to be soaking in their favourites, with the latest top 10 digital originals and overall TV series lists featuring many of the same titles.

Ontario-shot series continued to land on both the charts. Prime Video’s The Boys — produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television Studios with Point Grey Pictures, Kripke Enterprises and Original Film — held its place at No. 2 on the digital originals list, while ranking at No. 4 in the overall TV demand list for the week of July 18 to 24. It was 26.92 times more in demand for that week, according to Parrot Analytics.

Other Ontario-filmed series include Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (17.02), which was at No. 6 in the digital list. Meanwhile, Hulu original The Handmaid’s Tale (pictured) (15.9), based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, came in at No. 9.

Netflix’s Stranger Things remained at the top of both the lists for the period. However, its demand rating of 97.33 was lower than the previous week’s 132.86 and its record high of 141.12.

Finishing off the top five of the digital list was Hulu original Only Murders in the Building, starring Hamilton-born Martin Short, Selena Gomes, and Steve Martin, which ranked at No. 3. HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death (18.62) came in at No. 4, followed by Lucasfilms’ The Mandalorian (18.45).

Meanwhile in the overall TV series list, AMC’s Better Call Saul (32.31) snagged the No. 2 spot, followed by Sesame Studios’ Sesame Street (28.66). At No. 5 was Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants (26.13).

Parrot Analytics calculates its Top 10 lists using Demand Expressions, which are shown by using a metric that demonstrates how much more in-demand the top series are than the average TV show (linear, pay TV, SVOD and AVOD) in Canada. For example, a difference of 1x represents the market average and 10x means a series is 10 times more in demand than the average TV show in this market.
