Dan Levy launches new shingle

The Schitt's Creek co-creator has partnered with publicist Megan Zehmer to develop the slate for Not a Real Company Productions.

Dan Levy has launched a very real new production banner with Not a Real Production Company.

The prodco will be run with Levy’s producing partner and long-time publicist Megan Zehmer, who has been tapped as president of film and television.

Zehmer will oversee and expand the company’s existing development slate as a creative partner with Levy. The two have worked together since Levy’s days as co-creator, showrunner and star of Schitt’s Creek, including for its Emmy campaign, which led to a record-breaking nine Emmy wins within a single year in the comedy category.

The launch follows a string of deals and greenlights for Levy post-Schitt’s Creek, including an overall TV and first-look feature deal with Netflix; his first unscripted greenlight with cooking competition The Big Brunch on HBO Max; and the animated series Standing By, co-created with Canadian writer/director Ally Pankiw, now in development at Hulu.

Levy’s first feature under the Netlifx deal is an untitled romantic comedy and his directorial feature debut, in addition to serving as writer and star, with Stacey Snider and Kate Fenske of the indie studio Sister attached as producers.

The title of the new banner is likely recognizable for fans of Schitt’s Creek, which was produced by Not a Real Company Productions under Dan and Eugene Levy. However, Not a Real Production Company is a completely new shingle.

Levy said the prodco’s current content slate surpasses his expectations to create “elevated projects across all mediums, genres and formats that resonate with people in meaningful ways” in a statement on the launch. He adds that Zehmer has “both a savvy understanding of the business side of things and a real sensitivity to the humanity of the creative process” in her approach to development.
