A number of Canadian series and films have scored nominations at the 36th GLAAD Media Awards.
The annual awards recognize accurate and fair representation of the LGBTQ+ community in media. The nominations cover U.S. releases from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2024.
The CBC and Max series Sort Of (Sphere Media), is nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. Sort Of wrapped up its run on CBC in 2023, but was released on Max in the U.S. in January. Over three seasons, Sort Of followed the professional and personal life of non-binary millennial Sabi Mehboob, played by co-creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Bilal Baig (pictured).
D.W. Waterson’s Backspot (Night is Y, Page Boy Productions, Prospero Pictures) was one of three Canadian features nominated for Outstanding Film – Limited Theatrical Release. The film, released in U.S. theatres in May via L.A.-based XYZ Films, follows a cheerleader, played by Devery Jacobs, and her girlfriend when they are selected for an all-star squad.
Nice Picture’s Fitting In was also nominated in the category. The semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film, written and directed by Molly McGlynn, was released in the U.S. by Blue Fox Entertainment and in Canada by Elevation Pictures on Feb. 2, 2024.
Lastly, there’s writer-director Trevor Anderson’s feature debut Before I Change My Mind (Loud Whisper Productions, Outside Line Studio), about a non-binary teenager in 1987 who moves to small town Alberta with their family. It had its world premiere at Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival in 2022 and a limited theatrical release in the U.S. last March via Epic Pictures. The film was released in Canada via Game Theory Films last April.
Among the nominees for Outstanding Film – Streaming or TV is Tubi’s Wynonna Earp: Vengeance (SEVEN24 Films). The 90-minute special was written by Emily Andras, the creator of the original four-season western horror series, and directed by Paolo Barzman.
The Groomsmen: Second Chances, which aired on Hallmark Channel on Oct. 24, is nominated in the same category. The MOW hails from Blink49 Studios-owned Front Street Pictures. Vancouver-based Patrick Street Pictures’ Seasons Greetings from Cherry Lane also scored a nomination. The film aired on Hallmark on Dec. 5.
Finally, Toronto-born writer-director Dan Levy‘s Netflix original film Good Grief, hailing from his L.A.-based prodco Not Another Production Company, was nominated in the category. The film had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. in December 2023 before streaming on Netflix in January.
“If You Love Me,” an episode of Canada/Belgium copro Beyond Black Beauty (Sinking Ship Entertainment, Leif Films, Saga Films), was nominated for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming or Film – Live Action. While the series airs on Family Channel in Canada, it is available on Prime Video in the U.S.
The Apple TV+ series Jane, produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and the Jane Goodall Institute, is also nominated in the category.
The 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will take place in L.A. on March 27.
