The Twilight Saga: Eclipse delivered solid business for E1 Entertainment over the Canada Day long weekend, generating $11.5 million over five days.
Nearly half of its earnings came on opening day Wednesday, when the third installment in the Twilight franchise rang in $4.1 million, besting the 2003 Wednesday record set by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with $3.8 million.
The Vancouver-shot Eclipse opened in a record 403 locations across Canada.
Still, when comparing opening weekend earnings, Eclipse‘s predecessor New Moon still dominates with its three-day $11.2 million box office take in November last year. It was the second-largest opening weekend ever in Canada, trailing only The Dark Knight.
The franchise opener Twilight clocked in $5.6 million in its opening weekend in 2008 and grossed just over $20 million overall in Canada, behind New Moon‘s $30 million total box office take.
