TIFF carves out lineup with world premiere of Knives Out sequel

The Netflix-bound Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the first title to be announced for the Toronto International Film Festival's 2022 edition.

R ian Johnson’s Netflix-bound Knives Out follow-up is cutting a path toward the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), with a world premiere set for this September.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the first TIFF 2022 film to be revealed for the 47th edition of the festival, which will return to all in-person events from Sept. 8 to 18.

The Greece-set sequel to 2019’s Oscar-nominated Knives Out is produced by Johnson and Ram Bergman for T-Street Productions.

Cast members include Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

TIFF has been embracing streamers like Netflix, Prime Video and Crave for several years. Netflix opened the festival in 2018, with David Mackenzie’s Outlaw King, followed by Crave original documentary Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band in 2019. Netflix did not submit any films to TIFF 2020, but returned last year with titles including Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, Antoine Fuqua’s The Guilty and Theodore Melfi’s The Starling.

This year’s TIFF has a new leadership team, including Cameron Bailey as CEO, a role he was appointed to last November; Beth Janson, former CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, as COO; and Anita Lee as chief programming officer.
