Telefilm has partnered with Quebec-based environmental sustainability program Rolling Green to launch a case study on the environmental impact of feature film in Canada.
Led by the Conseil québécois des événements écoresponsables (CQEER), which is a co-founding partner of Rolling Green, the case study will follow a major Quebec feature film through its production lifecycle to measure its environmental footprint.
The data will be used to analyze and understand the Quebec film industry’s environmental impact and identify key priorities for sustainable practices.
Rolling Green was founded by the Quebec Film and Television Council (QFTC) — which is the co-ordinator of the program — CQEER and Quebecor. The program was launched in April 2021 to support the audiovisual industry’s move to reduce its environmental impact.
Telefilm now serves as a catalyzing partner on the program. Netflix recently joined the program as a federating partner, which includes MELS, TVA and the City of Montreal. The program counts Institut national de l’image et du son as its training partner; École Supérieure ATM du Cégep de Jonquière and RBC as driving partners; and producer association AQPM, Carrousel and Téo Taxi as uniting partners.
“We’re especially pleased and grateful to be able to count on the support of Telefilm Canada for the Rolling Green program. Carrying out this case study is a milestone in our effort to collect specific data from Quebec film sets, which will allow us to better support and provide tools for professionals in the sector in their transition to more sustainable practices,” said Christine Maestracci, president and CEO of QFTC in a statement.
Earlier this month Telefilm launched an eco-responsibility action plan with the goal of hitting net-zero emissions by or before 2050. The plan includes financing research on sustainable practices and setting carbon-emission reduction targets by 2023.
“It is essential to support research that tells us how we can make a real difference by adopting an eco-responsible production approach,” said Christa Dickenson (pictured), executive director and CEO of Telefilm. “Sharing knowledge and being there for each other is the first step of our commitment.”
