Great Pacific Media developing series with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee

The Kim's Convenience star will explore superfans of major franchises as host of Fandemonium.

Vancouver-based Great Pacific Media has struck a development deal with Kim’s Convenience star Paul Sun-Hyung Lee for a new series exploring superfans of major pop-culture franchises.

The factual branch of Thunderbird Entertainment Group says Lee will host Fandemonium, which will look at the sub-cultures of makers, artists and collectors who are inspired by fictional worlds such as those of Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Nintendo, anime and wrestling. He’ll investigate different fandoms in each episode, such as rare collectables, long-lost props, a mechanic who makes screen-accurate movie car replicas and a one-of-a-kind custom pinball machine.

Lee played patriarch Appa on the hit Korean-Canadian comedy series Kim’s Convenience, which was produced by Thunderbird and aired on CBC and Netflix. Last month Kim’s Convenience was acquired by FilmRise to be featured on its own free ad-supported streaming TV service (FAST) channel.

Lee is a superfan himself, known for his love of the Star Wars universe and creating costumes inspired by the franchise. He recently got to fulfill his lifelong dream of being part of that world with the role as X-Wing pilot Captain Carson Teva in the Disney+ hit series The Mandalorian. Lee was also recently cast in Netflix’s upcoming series Avatar: The Last Airbender, currently in production in Vancouver.

Fandemonium is a passion project made for the fans, about the fans, by a fan,” says Lee, in a statement. “I’m excited to be collaborating with Great Pacific Media to celebrate fandom in all its forms and show the world the positivity and impact that being a fan can be.”

Thunderbird CEO Jennifer Twiner McCarron says Fandemonium explores how pop-culture media can unite people from all different backgrounds. “There is no one better than Paul to find that out,” she says. “He is immensely talented and brings so much enthusiasm to his work, we’re so excited to be working with him on another series.”
