Toronto’s Infield Fly secures international deal for Ryan Reynolds-narrated Curb Your Carbon

Netherlands-based factual specialist Off the Fence will distribute the doc worldwide, building on the company's Canadian presence.

A msterdam-headquartered production and distribution outfit Off the Fence (OTF) has secured a worldwide distribution deal with Canadian prodco Infield Fly Productions for the environmental documentary Curb Your Carbon, narrated by Vancouver actor Ryan Reynolds.

The doc has also been commissioned by CBC, where it’s set to premiere Jan. 14, 2022 on the public broadcaster’s science-based series The Nature of Things.

The move further strengthens OTF’s presence in the Canadian market, after opening an office in Toronto in August and setting up content deals with two local prodcos last month.

The factual specialist has also repped Toronto-based Infield Fly’s TV doc Inside the Great Vaccine Race, made for The Nature of Things, and worked with Canadian prodcos including Parallax Film Productions, Go Button Media, Rotating Planet.

Curb Your Carbon (pictured) is described as a globetrotting and humorous look at 10 simple ways to fight climate change — from reducing food waste, to consuming less meat and eating more bugs.

Liam O’Rinn wrote the doc and co-directed with P.J. Naworynski. It’s produced by Dugald Maudsley and Gillian Main of Infield Fly Productions, who made it in association with CBC. It was made with the participation of the Canada Media Fund, the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, Ontario Creates, the Rogers Documentary Fund, Rogers Telefund and produced with the cooperation of the Writers Guild of Canada, the Canadian Federation of Musicians and SAG-AFTRA.

Maudsley said while there’s a hunger for stories about the planet, climate-change docs often overwhelm viewers.

“So we’re using humour to empower people with a list of things that will have a real impact on climate change,” said Maudsley, in a statement. “And partnering with Off the Fence, who are here in Canada now, means we can continue to build our relationship and work on new projects together.”

Owned by ZDF Enterprises, OTF won a BAFTA and Oscar for best documentary feature earlier this year for My Octopus Teacher.

Loren Baxter, OFT’s head of acquisitions, said the company has been working with Maudsley and Main of Infield Fly for the past few years and connects with their enthusiasm, creativity and passion for science and the planet.

“Curb Your Carbon was already an incredible project, but with the addition of Ryan Reynolds, we’re confident this will reach a huge audience,” said Baxter.
