The Norstar Entertainment children’s release, Magic in the Water, is not faring too well at the box office, according to vp Andy Myers, with $200,000 on 90 screens after the first week. The wide release, mirrored by TriStar in the States, also includes a dubbed French version on 14 screens in Quebec.
Myers lists warm weather and ‘quite a glut of family films’ released in July and August as the problems. ‘It’s safe to say the appetite for family entertainment has been satiated. In the wake of at least a half a dozen rather prominent family films, this film probably would have fared better either earlier in the summer when it was originally slated for release (in May) or later in the year.’
Myers says the distributor held off the May release because ‘we felt that more time would generate more awareness and interest.’ In the end, TriStar selected the launch date of Aug. 30.
Mortal Kombat
In other box office news, Alliance Releasing is topping the box office charts for three weeks running with Mortal Kombat. The film has pulled in $6,045,459 in 19 days on 213 screens across the country.
