The good news is continuing to roll in for CBC and HBO Max’s original series Sort Of.
Abacus Media Rights (AMR), which is handling international sales, announced Wednesday (Aug. 18) that the half-hour comedy has been picked up by Sky (U.K.), Stan (Australia), M6-Téva (France) and the Nordic Entertainment Group (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Poland and the Baltic countries). Premiere dates have not been confirmed in any of the acquisition territories.
The high-profile deals indicate that there exists significant international interest in the series, which is created by Toronto-based playwright Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo (Save Me) and produced by Sienna Films.
Several other deals are in the pipeline, according to AMR.
The news comes less than a week after TIFF revealed that Sort Of will have its North American premiere in its Primetime lineup, alongside the world premieres of Ava DuVernay and Colin Kaepernick’s Colin in Black and White, and Netflix’s Korean original series Hellbound. The TIFF screening will come after the show’s world premiere at French TV festival Séries Mania, where it will compete in the International Panorama competition.
CBC greenlit the show last fall. At the time it had not been revealed that U.S. streaming service HBO Max was also a co-commissioner on the 8 x 30-minute series. That announcement came last week, with HBO Max confirming a fall premiere date for the show. In Canada, it will debut on CBC Gem on Oct. 5 before premiering on CBC TV on Nov. 9.
The show stars Baig, who is also co-showrunner, as a genderfluid millennial who is in transition in all aspects of their life. Baig shares showrunning responsibilities with Filippo. The pair also serve as executive producers alongside Sienna’s Jennifer Kawaja and Julia Sereny.
Season one is directed by Filippo and Renuka Jeyapalan (Kim’s Convenience), with Jenn Engels (Transplant), Nelu Handa (Baroness Von Sketch Show) and Ian Iqbal Rashid (How She Move) in the writers’ room.
Also starring in the series are Gray Powell (Hudson & Rex), Amanda Cordner (Baroness Von Sketch Show), Ellora Patnaik (Kim’s Convenience), Grace Lynn Kung (Transplant), Supinder Wraich (Crawford), Gregory Ambrose Calderone (Salvation), Alanna Bale (Cardinal) and newcomers Kaya Kanashiro and Aden Bedard.
Sienna Films’ parent company Sphere Media is the worldwide distributor, with AMR handling international sales.
