MIPCOM delegates record healthy sales

Post mipcom, there is excitement at Salter Street Films over a closed deal with France’s Canal Plus for 28 hours of the new lexx series. Salter’s police thriller Major Crime also made a good showing, closing deals with networks in Australia, Italy, Poland, Sweden and the former Yugoslavia with a six-minute promo tape.

New satellite services and specialty channels contributed to a record-breaking year for mipcom, which ran Sept. 26-30 and which hosted over 10,000 international delegates taking part in the five-day market.

The cbc is recording almost $500,000 in sales, attributed mainly to program renewals and inventory including Fashion File and The Nature of Things.

According to Christina Hajek, deputy director of international sales and coproductions at cbc, there is always one country that seems to go into more of an active buying mode, and while a few years ago it was South America, it now looks like Eastern Europe is really on the move, with Poland in particular picking up more than at past markets.

Stephen Ellis, president of Ellis Enterprises, says in terms of their natural history products, more and more buyers are pursuing them to pre-commit to what is in production before programs are produced and secure product at the early stages.

Nat Abraham, Sullivan Entertainment senior vp, says a couple of new territories are pending for season three of Wind At My Back, including Germany. Thirty half-hour episodes of travel documentary Discover Your World sold to The Travel Channel in a couple of territories while the u.k. and Eastern Europe are still looking it over.

Atlantis Releasing scored with mow Borrowed Heart, acquisitions of Night Man and the second season of PSI Factor, which is in the process of inking deals in ‘at least two major territories,’ says president Ted Riley.

While there was some interest in Epitome Pictures’ Riverdale, Riley says it is still in its early stages and they are taking a wait-and-see approach. As for Traders, negotiations continue in a couple of the major markets and Atlantis hopes to have some news by natpe, says Riley.

Great North closed sales with Sweden for Orange Seed Myth And Other Lies Mothers Tell. They are in discussions with other territories and are waiting for natpe to more actively launch their drama.

At Paragon Entertainment, Natalie Vinet, the new director of sales for Accolade Releasing, signed deals including The Teddy Bears Adventures and Legends of the Land for South Africa and Malaysia free television. Israel took 50 episodes of Kratts’ Creatures and 19 episodes of The Rez. Negotiations continue for The Rez and Ready Or Not in Belgium.
