Molly Yeomans, Jack Lenz and Mike Katrycz, the creators of an as-yet-unproduced musical based on the legend of St. George and the dragon, have entered into a film and television pact with new Toronto-based family animation company Camelot Pictures.
Camelot is headed by president and ceo Joe Garwood, former executive vp and coo of Baton Broadcasting. Garwood says he considers ‘St. George to be the centerpiece for Camelot’s development slate, embodying the very essence of what Camelot hopes to acquire in properties.’
The deal for world rights to St. George, other than live stage rights which remain with St. George Workshop Productions, was struck after a showcase of the musical’s songs featuring Michael Burgess and Susan Gilmour. The agreement calls for ‘the cross-participation by the parties in the respective rights to the property’ and was signed for a ‘mid five-figure advance against a low six-figure sum.’
In addition to St. George, which Camelot intends to develop as a two-hour theatrical animated feature ‘in the style of Disney’s Lion King,’ Camelot has recently acquired an option for world rights for the development of the original literary work by Pamela F. Service entitled Winter of Magic’s Return and its sequel, Tomorrow’s Magic, published by Simon and Schuster.
Service’s works also have a medieval theme and Camelot intends to develop them as an animated video series aimed at children.
