Atomic Cartoons, Sinking Ship win Daytime Emmys

The Last Kids on Earth and Ghostwriter were among a number of Canadian-produced series to snag awards.

Canadian production companies including Atomic Cartoons and Sinking Ship Entertainment picked up a number of coveted prizes on Sunday night as the Daytime Emmys virtually handed out its 2020 awards.

The Last Kids on Earth, produced by Atomic Cartoons for Netflix, won the prize for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program, fending off competition from Carmen Sandiego, Milo Murphy’s LawElena of Avalor: The Magic Within and Big City Greens: Green Christmas. The project, based on Max Brallier’s book series of the same name, follows a group of suburban middle schoolers who live in a decked-out tree house and battle zombies in the aftermath of the monster apocalypse.

Sinking Ship took home four awards in total. AppleTV+ series Ghostwriter, which Sinking Ship produces alongside Sesame Workshop, claimed the award for Outstanding Children’s or Family Viewing Program ahead of Holly Hobbie, Bunk’d, Odd Squad and Just Add Magic. The series, about a group of kids who team up when a ghost haunts a neighbourhood bookstore and starts releasing fictional characters into the real world, debuted on Apple TV+ in November 2019.

Preschool adventure series Dino Dana (Amazon Prime Video) also won a pair of awards: Outstanding Special Effects Costume, Makeup and Hairstyling; and Outstanding Limited Performance in a Daytime Program for Bill Cobbs. As well, Odd Squad (PBS, TVOKids) won the award for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Live Action Program.

With the wins, Sinking Ship said it has now won 21 Daytime Emmys in total. The Toronto-based production company was nominated for 16 awards this year.

Elsewhere, Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10, produced by DHX Media, Imagine Documentaries and Tremolo Productions for Apple TV+, won the award for Outstanding Single Camera Editing. The partially scripted series sees a “documentary” crew trying to solve the mystery of whether or not Snoopy was a world-famous, top-secret astronaut.
