The Cartel expands its Canadian operation with new production deal

The L.A.-based company inked a 10-movie production deal with Untitled Entertainment, with more than half of those set to shoot in Winnipeg and Vancouver.

stan spry 2020L.A.-based management and production company The Cartel, which established a Canadian outpost in Manitoba in summer 2018, has inked a production deal with U.S. management company Untitled Entertainment that will bring a number of new movies to Vancouver and Winnipeg over the next two years.

Under the deal, The Cartel and Untitled will develop and produce 10 movies for TV and theatrical release, with at least half of them shooting in Vancouver and Winnipeg, according to Stan Spry (pictured), co-CEO at The Cartel.

Untitled exec Laura Notarianni (Orphan Black, Killjoys), who was previously a scripted programming exec at Temple Street Productions, will serve as the creative point person on the deal.

The agreement between The Cartel and Untitled comes a year after Temple Street’s parent company, Boat Rocker Media, acquired an undisclosed stake in Untitled, which was founded in 1999 by Jason Weinberg and Stephanie Simon and has offices in L.A., New York and London.

Untitled reps a roster of high-profile stars including Simon Baker, Elizabeth Banks, Connie Britton, David Caruso, Chris Cooper, Rosario Dawson, Matt Dillon, Kate Hudson, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Lange, Melissa Leo, Ray Liotta, Madonna, Demi Moore, Mike Myers, Chris O’Donnell, Jeremy Renner, Sam Rockwell, Ian Somerhalder, Marisa Tomei, Uma Thurman, Sofia Vergara and Olivia Wilde.

The Cartel, which has produced and financed over 90 movies and series, launched Cartel Pictures Canada in August 2018. In recent years, the company has filmed a number of MOWs and feature films in Winnipeg as it ramps up its international production slate. In the U.S., the company is currently in pre-production on Day of the Dead, a new 10-part series for Syfy, and season two of Creepshow for AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder.

Through a combination of a robust tax credit program and growing crew capacity, Manitoba’s production volume has soared in recent years. In fiscal 2018/19, the overall production spend in Manitoba climbed to $269.4 million, from $173 million in 2016/17. Over the past three years, union member earnings have more than tripled to $32 million for 2019 from $10 million in 2016, according to IATSE 856.
