In the wake of its own commercial awards show, Canada captured a handful of international nods for television advertising at the Clio Awards, held May 13 and 14 in New York. Toronto agencies Gee Jeffrey & Partners and Marshall Fenn won bronze and Toronto’s TOPIX/Mad Dog was awarded silver at the show, one of the largest ad fetes in the world.
TOPIX/Mad Dog won silver for a spot called ‘The Face of Technology’ for client Comdisco out of Saatchi & Saatchi Rochester, for which topix created a 2D/3D animated character made out of computer parts. topix art director was Mark Cutler, director of animation was Frank Falcone and producer was Anne Deslauriers.
Gee Jeffrey won bronze for the ‘Phone Bomb’ and ‘Cell Block’ cinema campaign for Rogers/Cantel. The mini-movie style dramatizations stress the importance of cell phone etiquette in theaters. ‘Cell Block,’ which also won a bronze single award, was directed by Players Film Company’s David McNally and ‘Phone Bomb’ was directed by Radke Films’ Eddy Chu. Agency creative director on both spots was Robin Heisey.
Marshall Fenn’s bronze winner was ‘Breaker’ for client Casino Rama, directed by Maxx Films’ Larry August.
Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York, won the tv Grand Clio for its work on Fox Network’s National Hockey League advertising. Goodby Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, was named agency of the year for the second year running, scoring the most overall points, largely for its work on Nike and Budweiser.
