• New sci-fi series V ruled the ratings on Tuesday on CTV where it debuted with 2.1 million viewers (2+), to become the fall’s top-rated new program in Canada. The B.C.-shot series, which follows the arrival of a seemingly friendly alien species on Earth, surpassed the high-flying premieres of new fall series including CBC’s Battle of the Blades and Global’s Glee, each with 1.9 million viewers. The show netted an impressive 14.3 million viewers on ABC. It stars Scott Wolf (Party of Five) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost).
• Spanish-speaking residents of Western Canada will have access to TLN en Espanol, courtesy of the Shaw Digital TV network, which added the service this week. The 24-hour, all-Spanish channel is now part of Shaw’s lineup in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. Featuring Spanish-language programming from around the world, the new channel complements TLN’s existing property Telelatino, featuring Spanish, Italian and English programming. Highlights of the channel’s lineup include daily news coverage from CNN en Espanol, sports coverage including the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010, soap operas and talk shows.
• VisionTV has hooked up with Filemobile to launch a new enhanced version of its video-on-demand service. The service uses Filemobile’s broadband video player to showcase hundreds of clips and full-length programs from Vision’s lineup. It also allows viewers to customize personal playlists and share favorite videos with friends.
• The National Film Board’s animated doc Tying Your Own Shoes, from filmmaker Shira Avni, was feted with the Golden Dove prize for a short film at the 52nd International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film in Germany. The award comes with a €5,000 cash prize.
• The Whistler Film Festival says it will screen a total of 80 films at its ninth edition, getting underway Dec. 3, with 80% of the titles being screened for the first time in what is a record for the fest. WFF will open with Jacob Tierney’s The Trotsky and wrap with the skiing doc The Edge of Never.
• CTV is pushing a multi-platform, multi-channel campaign for this year’s edition of the Scotiabank Giller Prize. The Giller will air live on Bravo! and BookTelevision on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 9 p.m. ET, hosted by Canada AM‘s Seamus O’Regan. It will be rebroadcast on CTV, A and Star! and will also be accessible on-demand at ctv.ca.
