TIFF staff faces reorg

The Toronto International Film Festival has begun reorganizing as it draws closer to moving into Bell Lightbox next year.

According to spokesperson Jennifer Bell, ‘that could mean we reassign or redeploy people in the organization, and that day-to-day duties may change. Some functions and roles may be phased out entirely.’

Bell says TIFF’s new downtown headquarters will reorient the fest’s focus — running five screens and year-round events, for example — and as a result management wants to ensure that the right employees are in the right roles before Bell Lightbox opens its doors in fall 2010.

The review process was unveiled to TIFF’s 120-strong workforce at a regular all-staff meeting last week led by festival head Piers Handling.

‘We will net out with more people in the organization,’ after the review, said Bell.

She added that no layoffs have been announced so far, but sidestepped when asked if job cuts were in the works further down the road. (Know more? Email us!)

As the festival looks to close a gap in capital financing for Bell Lightbox, TIFF also indicated it has secured a 15-year loan from the Ontario government for up to $46 million in provincial funding.

The new loan comes via the Ontario Strategic Infrastructure Financing Authority, made possible after TIFF was deemed an ‘arts training facility’ by the province.

That follows RBC putting its name and sponsorship dollars behind the RBC Learning Studio at Bell Lightbox to support educational programs.
