Bell Media’s Discovery has commissioned a second season of Disasters at Sea ahead of its April 16 premiere.
The docuseries is produced by Bell Media’s in-house prodco Exploration Production Inc. (EPI) in association with Smithsonian Networks (U.S.) and Discovery Canada and was commissioned in conjunction with the Smithsonian Channel and Seven Network in Australia. Disasters at Sea documents the real-life stories of marine disasters through re-enactments and interviews with experts.
Season-two production is taking place in a purpose-built studio in Hamilton, ON, as well as on location throughout Canada and the U.S. New episodes will premiere in 2020.
Exploration Distribution Inc. (EDI), EPI’s international distribution arm, said the series has been picked up in more than 110 markets so far.
Discovery has seen a recent ratings uptick. Unscripted series Heavy Rescue: 401 saw a 28% increase in average audience viewers for its season three premiere (481,000 viewers) in comparison to season two, with more than half falling into the 25-54 demo. The channel has seen an overall audience increase by 12% in the same demo.
