For four days, international film and TV industry movers and shakers soaked in the (intermittent) sunshine between panels and networking events at the 2018 Banff World Media Festival. Held at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, the annual festival kicked off in June 10 with an international media leaders panel, hosted by Goodmans partner David Zitzerman, and a conversation between Canadian Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly and CMF president Valerie Creighton. The following days were filled with panel discussions, including those by the festival’s company of distinction, NBCUniversal, which talked about its International Studios’ Canadian strategy and announced Hayu’s Canadian launch date. Meanwhile, Peacock Alley’s Travelers took home best sci-fi, fantasy and action series and the Rogers Prize for Excellence in Canadian Content at the Rockie Awards program competition. And the industry came out in full force to hear why Netflix picked up the sci-fi series and what’s on the streamer’s project checklist.
