Vancouver: DaVinci’s Inquest, Outer Limits, short film Evirati and youth series Caitlin’s Way dominated their competition as nominees in the 2001 Leo Awards celebrating the B.C. film industry.
In all 82 productions made the cut.
Enroute to garnering 13 nominations each among the drama series contenders, coroner series DaVinci’s Inquest scored heavily with its writing, directing and performance, while anthology Outer Limits was well recognized in the technical categories like design and sound. Other best drama nominees include Cold Squad, Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda and Mysterious Ways.
Bruce Spangler’s Protection and Lynne Stopkewich’s Suspicious River topped the best feature category with nods to their directors, performers and writers – nine nods each. Arne Olsen’s Here’s To Life earned eight nominations including director and male lead (Will and Grace star Eric McCormack). Other best feature nominees include Lunch with Charles, Scorn and We All Fall Down.
Simon Capet’s period piece Evirati has nine nominations in the short film category, including four for Capet himself. Other best short films include Lift, What Else Have You Got?, When I Was SevenS’ and Foxy Lady, Wild Cherry.
Caitlin’s Way overwhelmed the youth category with nine nominations including three of its directors, three of its performers and two of its writers. Other nominees for best youth or children’s program are Edgemont, Flipping the World: Drug’s Through a Blue Lens and So Weird.
Competition was much closer in the documentary category. Eric Paulsson’s Island of Shadows and Penelope Buitenhuis’s Tokyo Girls run head-to-head with six nominations including best director, cinematography and score. Other best doc nominees include Beaverbrook: The Various Lives of Max Aitken, Nuclear Dynamite and The Story of the Coast Salish Knitters.
Information series Champions of the Wild has three of its four nominees vying for the best director trophy, while Storm Warning has four different nominations. CBC Newsworld/Foreign Assignment is the only other best information nominee.
Vicki Gabereau will duke it out with Weird Homes in the talk/lifestyle category. Each program has three nominations and will compete with Healthy Home, Quiet Places and Urban Rush in the best of the genre.
B.C.’s first sitcom Big Sound earned seven nominations in the music/comedy/variety category including three for performers Deanna Milligan, Colin Cunningham and Matthew Good. Kevin Cottam’s dance film Sola earned five nominations. International Stop Racism Concert & Awards earned the third ‘best of’ nomination.
Mainframe Entertainment’s Action Man and Casper’s Haunted Christmas earned four nominations each in the animation category. The third best animation nominee is Aaagh! It’s the Mr. Hell Show.
Best student programs include Best of Betsey, Bob Appleby is a Loser, Impression, The Inbetweener and Table-4.
Trophies will be handed out May 11 and 12 at the Hotel Vancouver. *
