Netflix has given a 10-episode order to the vampire series V-Wars, produced by Toronto’s High Park Entertainment.

The hour-long drama is scheduled to begin filming in Sudbury, ON in June and will also shoot elsewhere in the Toronto area throughout the summer.

V-Wars is based on the IDW Publishing comic book franchise of the same name, from U.S. author Jonathan Maberry.

High Park developed the series with IDW’s independent content studio IDW Entertainment, which holds worldwide rights to the property (excluding Canada). Domestically, High Park is handling distribution.

Canadians William Laurin and Glenn Davis, who jointly created the hour-long drama Aftermath (Space, Syfy), will serve as showrunners.

High Park co-presidents Eric Birnberg and Thomas Walden are executive producing the series alongside IDW Entertainment’s David Ozer and Ted Adams and Marada Pictures’ James Gibb, as well as Brad Turner.

The show stars Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries) as Dr. Luther Swann, whose best friend contracts a mysterious disease and turns into a predator who feeds on other humans. As the disease spreads, society splits into two opposing camps pitting humans against the growing number of these vampires.

In 2014, IDW inked a first-look deal with eOne to jointly develop, finance and produce TV series based on its original comic book properties. That year, it was announced eOne would produce a TV adaptation of V-Wars but that series never came to fruition and the rights reverted back to IDW.

IDW has also partnered with a number of other Canadian production companies, including SEVEN24 Films on Wynonna Earp (Space, Syfy).
