International Emmy Kids Awards

Toronto-based Forté Entertainment’s Snapshots has nabbed the award for non-scripted entertainment at the International Emmy Kids Awards. Greenlit by Kids’ CBC in 2016, the unscripted series was co-created by Forté’s Andrea and Mitch Gabourie (pictured) and follows kids competing to take the best picture ever. The prodco picked up the award at a ceremony at MIPTV in Cannes on April 10. In addition to Forté’s win, Hank Zipper’s Christmas Catastrophe also won in the kid’s TV movie/miniseries category at the awards. The kids series is coproduced by DHX Media, Kindle Entertainment, Walker Productions and Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund.

Peabody digital media nominees

Halfire Entertainment’s Alias Grace and Toronto-shot The Handmaid’s Tale picked up nominations from the 77th Annual Peabody Awards. The two series were selected from a pool of 1,200 entries in the digital media category. Both Alias Grace and The Handmaid’s Tale were adapted from novels by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Produced by Toronto’s Halfire Entertainment in association with CBC for Netflix, Alias Grace follows an Irish immigrant and domestic servant who finds herself accused of the murder of her employer and his housekeeper. The Handmaid’s Tale, meanwhile, is produced by MGM Television for Hulu, with Toronto prodcos Take 5 Productions and Whizbang Films service-producing.

Hollyweb Awards

Canadians took home a number of prizes at the Hollyweb Awards, which celebrates the best in digital content, at an awards ceremony on April 8 in L.A. Kristal Clear Productions’ Kristal Clear was awarded best series, while its lead, Melanie Leishman won best actress in a comedy. The series follows an internet celebrity who reunites with her estranged identical twin. Meanwhile, Molly McGlynn took home the best directing award for her work behind the camera on LoCo Motion Pictures’ How to Buy A Baby. Other award winners include Black Elephant Productions’ Teenagers, which picked up best ensemble; Inconceivable lead Katie Stuart took home best actress in a drama; while Adam Christie from First Grade Films’ Man O took home best actor in a drama.
