Digital cinema, convergence at 8th MIM

Montreal: Digital cinema and special effects, electronic gaming and interactive TV are among conference topic highlights at this year’s 8th edition of the Multimedia International Market, which takes place at Montreal’s Place Bonaventure, Oct. 3-5.

The three-day MIM trade show is focused on innovation in digital technologies and market convergence and includes an exhibitors showcase, U.S. and ‘venture capital’ pavilions, an international buyers club and awards and conference programs.

Speakers at the Oct. 5 Electronics Games Track session, organized in collaboration with Fauves and the International Game Developers Association, include U.S.-based Harvey Smith, project director of ION Storm Austin, and Ken Papagan of Delmar Media.NET.

Speakers at the digital cinema/special effects workshop, sponsored by Telefilm Canada, also on Oct. 5, are Paul Lypaczewski, general manager, Discreet (Canada) and executive VP of Autodesk (U.S.), and Academy Award winner Loren Carpenter, president, Cinematrix, and head of research at U.S.-based Pixar.

The symposium program includes sessions on international electronic imaging, sponsored by the European Commission, and ‘Business Opportunities for the Multimedia and Film Industry in Canada,’ with featured speaker Percy Fung, CEO of Hong Kong’s Film Magic Group.

MIM’s social calendar includes a late-night dance party hosted by Astral Media at Club Soda, Thursday, Oct. 4.
