Production has started on the third season of CTV and Super Écran’s drama Cardinal. The show is produced by Sienna Films and Entertainment One.
Stars Billy Campbell and Karine Vanasse are back for six hour-long episodes, which are currently filming in North Bay, Ont. and Toronto. The new episodes are inspired by By the Time You Read This and Crime Machine, the fourth and fifth novels in the John Cardinal Mysteries series, written by Ontario native and award-winning author Giles Blunt.
The show’s third season, called Cardinal: By The Time You Read This, will also include new supporting cast members like Rya Kihlstedt (Ray Donovan), Aaron Ashmore (Killjoys) and Alex Ozerov (The Americans). The season has Cardinal (Campbell) and Delorme (Vanasse) working on a case that brings them close to a doomsday cult, with Cardinal also launching his own investigation into a personal and dangerous case.
The first season of Cardinal was the top new Canadian drama series of the 2016/17 broadcast season, averaging 1.1 million total viewers a week, according to Numeris numbers from Bell Media. The second season of the show is set to bow during the 2017/18 season on CTV and Super Écran. eOne has licensed the series internationally, with the first season airing already in territories including U.S., U.K., France, Spain and Scandinavia.
Daniel Grou (also known as Podz) returns to direct all six episodes of season three. The Canadian director also helmed all six episodes of the first season.
